Cycle Chala City Bacha

Cycle Chala City Bacha (C3B) envisions making Cycling the preferred mode for commute & a way of life across the country. To begin with we have implemented the program in all the 24 wards of Mumbai and initiated a similar program at Kochi, “Cycle with Kochi” Our Mission is to make Mumbai the Cycling Capital of India by 2030. The program objectives are:

  • To combat the diverse challenges and opportunities of each ward with a more contextual & collaborative approach we have appointed 24 Bicycle Councillors (one from each ward).
  • These councilors work at the local levels with specific BMC ward officers, relevant stakeholders & NGOs in their respective ward.
  • The purpose of this program is to promote cycling as a WAY of LIFE, increase ridership across demographics & focus on creating cycling infrastructure within each ward.
  • Each Councillor is selected though a rigorous selection process by an Expert Panel, that comprises urban planners, architects and transport experts along with their Passion, Commitment & Skills are mapped.

The three broad strategies developed for this programs includes institutional strengthening, outreach measures and hand-holding the core group and an action plan that translates ideas to reality. What makes this project unique is the attempt to bring together the technical group (NMT/transport cell), the key Stakeholders (formation of working group) and citizens by appointing 24 Bicycle Councillors, 48 Bicycle Marshals and 24 Youth Bicycle Councillors to form a CORE group who will support the initiatives.

C3B initiates large-scale public outreach through social media campaigns to disseminate the concepts of cycle-friendly streets, shared streets whilst keeping inclusivity in mind. Fun engagements like Romancing the City, engaging with local Cycling Clubs, road safety, ward rides, incentives, challenges & critical mass events are conducted regularly.

C3B Program has been endorsed by BYCS, an Amsterdam based non-profit entity with a mission 50by30. It is the perfect campaign at the perfect time to transition our city to healthier, safer place to live and work. By approaching the challenge from the bottom up; at ward level, and working together with a variety of stakeholders, this is our best chance at making lasting change.
